Buying Watches as a Gift

Is buying watches as a gift a good idea ?

Well, I remember an ex of mine buying me some cheap £10 watch from Oxford Street for my Chrimbo pressie one time,,,she knew I liked watches and thought she was buying with thought...erm no silly girl...a Rolex President would have been the ultimate thought...but anyway,,,I had to 'pretend' on the openening of the gift that I was chuffed...and the lie went on right through through Christmas

"You're not wearing the watch I bought you for Christmas" she said at Christmas dinner... erm no..I thought "I'm wearing my Omega Constellation Automatic Day Date thanks..I've put your crappy two bob watch inside one of the Christmas crackers and swapped it for one of those funny plastic moustaches which at least will give me 5 seconds of fun",,I had to stop myself from saying....

I had to dodge wearing that effin' watch for days.....the moral of the story is that unless you know what you are doing then buying a watch as a gift is not a good idea...especially if its one of those cheap nasty ones that end up making your wrist turn green !

If you are thinking about buying a watch as a gift then don't buy one of these cheap watches at the market that have no recognisable brand..and are mass produced in the far east using the cheapest of materials...do some research...buy branded watch that has a guarantee at least, because then you will know its made from stainless steel, leather or quality rubber...

Anyway, THAT WATCH didn't last long, I just accidentally on purpose washed the dishes while wearing it and then when it stopped working (what a surprise), I asked her where the guarantee was....

Obaku Watches

Heck....these watches are an absolute work of art... I finally managed to see some in the flesh when I went to London a few days ago, I wrote down the price of three models so I could compare them to online sellers.

They are incredibly thin and light, I did have my eye on buying one of these but they really are not for me, I placed one on my wrist and really did not feel it hardly...and I like to feel a watch, I thought that maybe as I can't feel it then it's possible I might forget it's there and could bang or knock it easily and they do look fragile.. probably the opposite of Ballistic watches/

But having said that I'm still pretty much undecided though and keep changing my mind because they look so beautiful, and I can confidently say that Obaku watches are the most beautiful watches that I have ever ever seen,, this links to the lowest priced seller of Obaku watches...yep I've done all the donkey work for ya !!

Maybe I will buy one in the end, but probably just to look at and admire, maybe put it in the display cabinet !!!!

Timex Watches

Probably the oldest watches company in the world. Timex watches are big worldwide favourites and have many brilliant ranges of watches including Timex Expedition, Timex WS4 Expedition and Timex Classic ranges of watches. I have linked to Watches Shop (yes I think we've established by now that they are my favs)...because they actually sell more models of Timex than the Timex website and for some reason are cheaper....this does happen quite a lot actually....A website that sells watches sells them cheaper than the manufacturer, this is because the manufacturer can't be seen discounting their own watches as they have to keep the RRP that they set else they will annoy all their retailers.

Buying Another Watch

The process of buying yet another wrist watch seems to be more of a quest and a challenge to save money rather than an impulse buy.

Well, I usually know which watch I want to buy beforehand and therefore I know the product number and its basically a job of Googling that product number and finding the website with the cheapest price, although recently I have found that I usually end up at the same site in the end, well 5 out of the last 7 times that is. I ended up buying my watches at Watches Shop, and on these occasions I used their Price Match Guarantee...after searching the web first.,..to get the lowest price....but my problem is this....

Considering I was buying a watch that costs around about the 50 quid mark.... after much googling and looking on sites such as Play and Amazon I found I could buy that watch for £46.99, then I used the Price Match Guarantee on Watches Shop, this feature allows you to email them with the price and location of the watch that you want (an obviously that they also sell) and then they will email you back with a lower price. So I did this and they emailed me back with a quote of £46.45....wow another saving of 54p...was it worth the time and effort ....I mean I work for £12 an hour, yet for some weird reason I was happy to spend about 1 and a half hours on the net trying to save 3 or 4 quid !! MADNESS

Also the quote from Watches Shop...anyway they were the cheapest to begin with as they didn't charge for delivery ....they offer free delivery in the UK on all their watches....while the company I got the lowest price from were on Amazon but wanted £3.99 delivery....so actually Watches Shop who were selling at the same price where actually cheaper by 3.99 as they didn't charge for delivery.

So all that time and effort resulted in a pittance of a saving yet for some reason I got a buzz out of it.. its not just the money and time,,,its the sense of acheivement and the glory of victory...the thrill of the chase....that I did find the lowest price....but I think next time I will just go straight to the checkout on Watches Shop because its just not worth the time !!!!!!!!!!

Buy Watches

As a big fan of watches and owner of 31 models, yep you could say I'm an addict..I know many people always ask my why on earth do I need so many watches ?

Well, I suppose its just like anything, some people like music and have a huge cd collection but they can't listen to all those tunes at once can they, depending on their mood they will listen to whatever takes their fancy...the same can be said about watches.

I can wear an Adidas watch or Casio watch if I am out running or playing sports or something like that, I can wear a Timex or Rotary for dressing up, especially my Rotary Gold watch, which compliments my suit nicely, so its good for business meetings or going out to functions like weddings or to the races etc.

Then I can wear a fashionable Micheal Kors or Mark Ecko watch if I am in the mood for being a bit flash,,,so theres the answer,....

I money was no object then I would probably buy at least one watch from each brand of watches available...I've got my eye on Black Dice watches recently,, and Obaku watches really catch my eye with their very slender designs,,, they are both next on the list when I next buy watches...its just a question of finding the best place to buy them.

Watch Forums

There are many forums around the net where you can talk about watches, although most of them are mainly forums that are run by watch sellers and don't really allow links to the competition, which goes against the grain of the internet really.

One forum I am a member of is PMWF which stands for poor mans watch forum.

Although they do sell watches they are quite open and relaxed on the forum, you can talk about watches and also buy and sell watches in their forums. Other forums are quite tough about linking to other watch sellers or affiliate links etc,,bit stuffy if you ask me.. so I am not going to link to them !

On PMWF you can look through peoples ads for buying and selling watches which are mostly secondhand watches.

The only problem I have with PMWF is that initially then were set up to cater for cheap watches hense the name...but alas....they slowly succumbed to the lure of big advertising revenue and ended up taking on expensive brands like Panerai, Omega and Rolex...so whats the point ?

The point is they they have abandoned their original principles...I don't think its about cheap watches anymore,, I am a poor man....I want to find a cheapish watch...say for about 30-100 quid max...I don't think a watch over 50 quid should be considered a poor mans watches, not in the day and age of cheap quartz watches.

Watches

Welcome to my blog about watches.

I will be reviewing lots of websites that sell wrist watches mainly fashion watches and designer watches from mid range brands such as Casio, Timex, Sekonda, Black Dice, Bench, Nixon, DKNY and Nautica and will also be reviewing these brands here.

SO lets recap...this blog won't be about luxury watches, just affordable high street watches.
